Aging and Disability
Kim Dong-Hwan
Abstract
Aging is not a disease; it is a phenomenon in which the body's function deteriorates over time. It is generally characterized by decreased ability to cope with external stimuli, failure to maintain homeostasis, and increased risk of contracting the disease. Frailty is a condition in which the ability to adapt to daily life and respond to acute stress is weakened due to various physiological functions and extra reduction due to aging. When approaching elderly patients, it is necessary to understand the concepts of aging, frailty, and disability, and it is important to appropriately control the parts connected with each other. First of all, it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of disability in the elderly, and it is necessary to watch the longitudinal changes of aging and dysfunction levels and to prevent the manifestation of geriatric syndrome. Aging of the disabled is also becoming a big social problem, and it is necessary to pay attention to the intervention plan of healthy aging of the disabled and health promotion of the elderly disabled.
